As we begin a new semester, students tend to fall into 3 groups:
The ones who have been secretly reading and are ready to jump back into academics,
Those who aren’t fully ready for academics, but are getting tired of staying at home,
And then there are those of us who love staying at home and sleeping but will have to resume eventually anyway
Now we all know which category we fall into, so no need to point fingers. But this holiday was so short, that I wasn’t even able to finish all the things I planned (including my Netflix binge list, for which I am currently accepting recommendations regardless🙏🏽). Now I’m kinda thankful we finished exams early since it gave us more time. This semester be like this:
Not to worry IEEE Unilag has some interesting updates for us:
IEEE Update
IEEE membership is now 50% off!!! 😱. Yes, you read that right, if you register now you get a discount of 50% which is $7 instead of the original price of $14. Moreover, if you register through IEEE Unilag you could pay N5600 instead of the N6000 discounted price (one of the perks of being a member of IEEE Unilag 😏). So, hurry now to register while the offer lasts!
But while we slept/holidayed, there were some major developments in the technology sector. And they were my favorite type of developments: controversial🤭. So let’s get to the gist of it
Meta will open up monetization to Nigerian creators in an attempt to keep them on their platforms
Meta Platforms has decided to allow content creators in Nigeria to make money through ads and other features, in a move it hopes will keep the country’s top content creators on its platforms. Those options and features are expected to be ready before June 2024, said Nick Clegg, the company’s President of Global Affairs.
On Friday, Clegg hosted some of Nigeria’s top creators in their Lagos office as part of a week-long visit to South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria, some of its important African markets.
“Nigerian creators have global reach,” Clegg said in a conversation with TechCabal on Friday afternoon, pointing out that creators will soon have “the ability to run ads in-stream and use other tools such as Instagram stars and gifts that are available to creators elsewhere in the world.”
AI lab presents Devin, The First AI Software Engineer
Cognition has announced the launch of a new AI tool called Devin which it claims to be the world's first fully autonomous AI software engineer which can write code with command prompts.
According to Cognition, Devin can “plan and execute complex engineering tasks requiring thousands of decisions. Devin can recall relevant context at every step, learn over time, and fix mistakes.
Devin is also equipped with common developer tools including the shell, code editor, and browser within a sandboxed compute environment—everything a human would need to do their work.
Finally, Devin can collaborate with the user actively. Devin reports on its progress in real-time, accepts feedback, and works with you through design choices as needed.”
So whatt do you think? As much as Devin can’t replace software engineers yet, does it pose a risk to their jobs? Cognition presents Devin as a smart assistant to make developers' lives easier but will AI reach the stage of being able to work independently?
Nvidia Reveals Blackwell Platform
At Nvidia's 2024 GTC AI conference, the company released the much-anticipated Blackwell platform. The Blackwell GPU is designed to be the world’s largest GPU built specifically for datacenter-scale generative AI, with 25 times better energy efficiency than its predecessor. The GPU is built from two dies joined by a 10 TB/s (terabyte per second) interconnect to create a single two-die GPU.
The Blackwell GPU architecture features six transformative technologies for accelerated computing, which aim to help unlock breakthroughs in data processing, engineering simulation, quantum computing, and generative AI. Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA said “Generative AI is the defining technology of our time. Blackwell is the engine to power this new industrial revolution. Working with the most dynamic companies in the world, we will realize the promise of AI for every industry.”
Among the many organizations expected to adopt Blackwell are Amazon Web Services, Dell Technologies, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, Oracle, Tesla, and xAI.
As we get back to our classrooms (not all of us sha as some would be starting their IT), IEEE has some productivity tips to guide us in the period, let’s take a look at some of them:
Productivity Tips
Time Management Apps: Tools like Trello and Asana allow students to organize tasks and deadlines, enhancing efficiency.
Study Techniques: The Pomodoro Technique promotes productivity through focused work intervals, interspersed with short breaks.
Educational Platforms: Khan Academy and Coursera provide a wealth of resources for self-paced learning across various subjects.
Note-Taking Apps: Evernote and OneNote help in efficiently gathering and organizing information, making study materials more accessible.
Well, now it’s time to prepare for another semester. With school work, non-school work, school-sponsored recreations (faculty weeks and the like), and everything in between, it’s gonna be a nice semester. I should probably tell you not to forget that you are a student, but this faculty probably wouldn’t allow you to. So I’ll end this with Goodluck, and don’t lose guard! See you soon.
