While we all take a minute to realize how quickly this semester has been moving, let's also discuss what it means.
We are halfway through the semester, so tests will be coming pretty soon. Assignments are already pouring in for me, and I'm sure it's the same for you. Lab work and projects are already here too.
But …
While there's a lot of work just waiting for us, there are things to look forward to. Like the upcoming faculty week, Sicon events and webinars, and of course, your favorite newsletter editor coming to provide you with tech gist to keep you informed and entertained while we go through our various academic headaches- I mean pursuits.
So without further ado, let's get into the gist of the day. Starting with our…
IEEE News…
Last week, we had an event discussing the opportunities that we could benefit from IEEE: monetarily, opportunities, and more.
One of the missions of IEEE UNILAG is to help you benefit from those opportunities as well as discover and develop yourself along the way.
If you would like to learn and improve your electronics or robotics skills, we have something for you too.
Our ROBOTICS community is open to new members who are ready to learn to apply their EEG knowledge in practice. If you would like to join, reply to this email or send a WhatsApp message, and I'll hook you up with the community lead. No need to thank me, I've got your back😉
IEEE UNILAG is also currently looking for volunteers! If you are interested in actively volunteering, developing your skills, and working with other great minds, you can apply here.
There's more…🌚
Every year, volunteers from IEEE UNILAG visit secondary schools to preach the gospel of STEM! We motivate them with our words and experiences. We also open their minds to the world of electronics by conducting a practical session with them!
Guess what!???
We are doing it again this year! So if you want to give public speaking a shot or teach secondary school students electronics or help out with logistics or just want to be around, please sign up to be a PRE-UNIVERSITY AMBASSADOR 🥺🥺. Apply here.
We'll be going on our first outreach on the 22nd of May 2024. Trust me, you don't want to miss it. I heard our chair will be taking us out for lunch afterward 🤭🤭🤭
I'm not supposed to say this but there's going to be a programming competition🤫🤫🤫🤫🤫. Here's a tip: the SICON's webinar title is the scope of the competition!!
Can you see why you ought to have attended those webinars🌚!! Not to worry, we still have some events lined up. Watch out…🤗
While planning has started, IEEE needs someone to help with the publicity on our social media pages. So, if you're social media savvy, here's an opportunity to serve the community! Apply here
Excos Spotlight…
Surprisingly, even with everyone having hectic timetables in this faculty, some people still manage to keep themselves involved outside the classroom. And then there’s Salim Oyinlola, who generates content about such people to encourage us too. He recently released another episode in his “Beyond the Classroom” series. Have you watched any? If Yes, feel free to tell me your favorite episode 🤗. If No, why not?🌚
In this week's episode, Salim had an enlightening discussion with Olayinka Atobiloye, who is an admission specialist at @MLHacks and also an IEEE UNILAG Exco. She reflects on her journey and experiences thus far, discussing how she went from surfing through Nairaland to know more about her course of study to landing multiple international internships.
I enjoyed every bit of it, and I'm sure there's a lot you can learn from her story. You can check it out here.
And now in Tech gist…
At least three Nigerian fintech startups—Moniepoint, Paga, and Palmpay—will block the accounts of customers dealing in cryptocurrency and report those transactions to law enforcement. This action follows Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA) classifying crypto trading as a national security issue.
Nigerian on-demand food delivery startup Chowdeck has secured $2.5 million in seed funding. Investors in the funding round include Y Combinator, Goodwater Capital, FounderX Ventures, Hoaq Fund, Levare Ventures, True Culture Funds, and Haleakala Ventures.
Renda, a Nigerian logistics startup, has raised $1.9 million in pre-seed funding. The funding round was led by Ingressive Capital, with participation from Techstars Toronto, Founders Factory Africa, Magic Fund, Golden Palm Investments, Reflect Ventures, SeedFi, and Vastly Valuable Ventures.
Nigerian start-ups have been gaining momentum not just in Nigeria. I know there are tech start-ups too that are budding, and I have a good feeling about them. African Silicon Valley anyone?
Brain teaser…
Well, now it's time to start preparing for that time of the week nobody likes:
Monday😑
But at least we've provided you with some relief ahead of the new week. Don't worry. You've got this. ULES and IEEE have treats in store for us this semester, so there's still a lot to look forward to. Well, this is where I sign off, guys. You'll hear from me soon again!
