Hey, guysss. Along with a change in administration, Dubbing Center Gist has a new writer at the helm🤩. Seun has passed the baton to me and I solemnly pinky-promise to keep you guys entertained and informed for as long as I'm here. The name on the email sender will still read “Seun from Dubbing Center Gossip” in honour of DCG’s founder, but you'll be hearing majorly from me now🤭.
My name is Mike (don’t mind the sender name) and I'll be your host during this administration. And apart from gossip, I also love controversies. Like exams being postponed. Is it good? Is it bad? Is it a trap, or can I actually slack off? Be sure to send me your thoughts on this. And while we mull over this, allow me to serve the main courses of today, starting with IEEE News.
IEEE Unilag news…
Early last month, IEEE Unilag executives had a hangout and meeting with our mentor at Boolean Labs. We had an amazing time and learned a lot from Engr. Adebayo Olubobokun (IEEE’s very own mentor) and other experts. You can check out some updates here.
In January, we also conducted our fresher's orientation in partnership with SEES. You can check for updates here.
Additionally, in January, paid IEEE members applied for the IEEE System Council Undergraduate Scholarship worth $5,000. You can also benefit from this opportunity, contact us for more info and guidance on how to go about it.
Stay tuned for our Preuniversity Volunteering Program coming up in April-May. We will be reaching out to various secondary schools, spreading the gospel of STEM, and providing advice and guidance on their STEM journey.
Productivity Tools…
IEEE would not leave you hanging, here are some tips to help you navigate this period.
Chat GPT (As a study partner): (who doesn’t use it). It’s more a question of how you use it, you know that section of your textbook that just isn’t clear? If you’re using GPT 3.5 (like me), you can copy-paste the section and have it re-explain it to you in simpler terms, you can even take it a step further by getting it to simulate questions for you, and if you use GPT 4 you can simply upload pictures of the text and past questions so it follows that pattern when testing you.
Notion: It is an all-in-one workspace that combines notes, tasks, wikis, and databases. It comes with community templates so you don’t have to start from scratch. The best part is with your student email you get access to some pro features for free. You can store your notes digitally, track job applications, project deadlines, etc.
Tech Gist…
In the spirit of continued controversies, we bring you more comparisons to consider:
Google’s Bard now supports image generation. And it is STILL FREE (unlike some other AI company that makes us pay $20 monthly).
Bard allows you to submit a prompt to generate images, and you can also click the “Generate more” button to see more images on your prompt. And along with the fact that Bard can access the Internet AND provide references for it's responses (instead of waiting for ChatGPT’s LLM to be updated past January 2022), I think Bard has stolen my heart (no homo). So for the people who have used both Bard and ChatGPT, which do we prefer?Samsung Galaxy S24 is outtttt! Naturally, I am biased towards Android phones, but the S24 is worth it. Apart from featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor (yes, it is generally preferred to A17), it has an on-device LLM. Meaning it can support services like live translation (I can be on a call with someone speaking Chinese and we will understand each other in real-time), and AI-powered object removal. And there's also the Circle-to-search, where circling anything on the screen triggers Google Lens. So what do you think? Does this put Android ahead in the mobile phone race? You can reply to this email to let me know your preference. Don't worry, I wouldn't judge (too much if you pick IPhone)
Neuralink has had its first human implant!!! Though not much information has been released on the results of the test, it is a major step in the development of BCI technology. Scientists all over the world are curious (and slightly worried) about this technology, but for now, all we can do is wait and see how it turns out. Neuralink is expected to help cure vision loss, paralysis, Alzheimer's, and other mental disorders, but what are YOUR thoughts on it? Do you look forward to controlling your devices with thoughts alone? Or are you worried many people will have seizures if Elon starts sending ads directly into your brain?
And now let's wrap things up with a technological meme:
