🧑💼🌟 The IEEE PES Humanitarian Activity Committee is organizing the IEEE PES Humanitarian Technology Project Design and Implementation 2023, an initiative involving humanitarian technology and sustainable development. The program will include participatory training on PES humanitarian technology project design and implementation, feedback on proposed projects, and a certificate of participation. Selected projects will be awarded limited funding of up to USD 2000 upon fulfillment of some basic formalities. Interested individuals can find the rules and regulations, registration, and project proposal template links provided.

Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) researchers developed software and hardware for a 4D printer for smart materials with magneto- and electro-mechanical properties that have biomedical applications. This machine, in addition to 3D printing, allows for the control of additional functions, such as programming the material's response so that shape-changing occurs in the presence of an external magnetic field or changes in its electric properties occur in the presence of mechanical deformation. This paves the way for the development of soft robots, smart sensors, and substrates that transmit signals to various cellular systems, among other applications.
Disney unveiled its next generation of robots at SXSW Friday.
With the head of a bunny and a child-size frame, the robot tumbled out of a box, summersault, and roller skated during a presentation entitled Creating Happiness: The Art & Science of Disney Parks Storytelling, led by Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D'Amaro.
Invention of the week…
Rockets
Although the Chinese may have made simple rockets as fireworks soon after the invention of gunpowder, serious military use came only later. “Arrows of flying fire” were used when the Mongols besieged the Chinese city of Kai-feng in 1232, but these were probably just fireworks tied to arrows. Chinese soldiers are not thought to have begun using rockets as weapons until 1300 at the earliest, but by 1330, rockets were equipped with explosive warheads and were no longer toys.
